Digestive Health
In Chinese Medicine, digestion sits right at the centre of our health.
It’s the system responsible for transforming the food we eat into the Qi and Blood that nourish every part of the body. When digestion is working well, we have steady energy, clear thinking, a strong immune system, and a sense of vitality that carries us through the day.
But when digestion is struggling, it often shows up in many different ways, not only through the gut, but through the skin, mood, hormones, and overall resilience.
Over the years in clinic I’ve seen how common digestive issues have become. Many people live with bloating, reflux, irregular bowels, or food sensitivities for years without real relief. Often the body is simply asking for the foundations to be rebuilt.
In Chinese Medicine we pay close attention to the Spleen and Stomach system, which is considered the “centre” of the body. This system governs how we transform food into nourishment and how that nourishment is distributed throughout the body.
When this system becomes weakened or disrupted, digestion can become sluggish, dampness can accumulate, and symptoms begin to appear.
How Chinese Medicine Supports Digestive Health
In clinic, treatment is always individual.
We begin with a conversation about your health history and what your body has been experiencing. I then use the diagnostic tools of Chinese Medicine, including pulse and tongue, to understand the underlying patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Treatment may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, meridian massage, and gentle guidance around food and lifestyle.
Rather than suppressing symptoms, the aim is to support the body’s ability to digest and transform nourishment again. As digestion improves, it’s common to see changes not only in the gut but in energy levels, sleep, skin, and overall wellbeing.
Symptoms That May Indicate Digestive Imbalance
Digestive imbalance can show up in many ways. Some of the more common symptoms I see in clinic include:
-
Heartburn or reflux
-
Gas and belching
-
Bloating
-
Abdominal fullness or discomfort
-
Diarrhoea
-
Constipation
-
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
-
Food intolerances
-
Poor appetite
-
Indigestion
-
Frequent hiccups
-
Skin issues such as rashes, acne or itching
-
Fatigue after eating
-
Changes in mood or low energy
Digestive health is rarely isolated to the gut alone. In Chinese Medicine, the digestive system sits at the centre of many physiological processes, which is why supporting this system can have far-reaching effects across the body.
