THE SUBSTANCE BENEATH: Skin

90 minutes | $255 | private health rebates available

These sessions have been created to sit alongside topical treatments women are receiving for their skin but to turn our attention inward to the Blood, Yin, nourishment, circulation and reserves that support the skin and the whole woman.

Chinese medicine gives us a depth of treating what is beneath the surface. Alongside what we can stimulate, move or change, we also ask: What is nourishing the tissues? What gives them substance? And what allows that nourishment to be received and transformed, distributed and held.

Blood is central to this, in Chinese medicine, Blood nourishes and moistens the skin, hair, eyes, muscles and tissues, while also having much wider relationships with menstruation, sleep, emotional presence and our ability to feel settled and rooted within ourselves.

Yin gives the body substance, moisture, depth and reserve. It is part of our capacity to replenish, the deeper resources from which activity, creativity, recovery and vitality can arise.

And then there is the Spleen, in Chinese medicine, the Spleen transforms what we take in into the Qi and Blood the body can use. It also has the function of holding and lifting, giving support, tone and integrity to the body and its tissues. So when we think about health, we are also tending the body’s ability to make nourishment, bring it to the tissues and hold them well.

Blood nourishes, Yin provides moisture, substance and reserve and the Spleen makes, transforms and holds. Together, they give us a way of tending the internal conditions from which health, moisture, tone, firmness and vitality can arise.

And while this dovetails beautifully with the skin and cosmetic treatments you may already be receiving, these resources don’t belong only to your skin. They belong to you, the same Blood, Yin and Qi are part of your sleep, menstrual cycle, hormonal transitions, recovery, energy, emotional life and capacity to feel well resourced within yourself.

There is also nothing more for you to do, there are no protocols to follow, that’s the beauty of Chinese Medicine, its rich history is outside of trends. From that viewpoint we weave in what may continue to nourish you outside the sessions, but these are more a way to live, rather than another health trend to follow.

Each session begins with an in depth Chinese medicine assessment so I can understand what your body needs that day, followed by an individual treatment that begins with a meridian style massage, followed by specific acupuncture, moxa and other Chinese medicine techniques aligned with your body’s needs.

For 90 minutes, you simply get to receive, and to nourish the substance beneath. These sessions are a place for regular tending: a monthly opportunity to nourish the substance beneath everything else, and to experience what Chinese medicine can offer when the emphasis is on cultivating a deeply nourished and well resourced woman.
